Notarize Your Child Travel Consent Letter in Ontario

Traveling across borders with a minor? Ensure a smooth, stress-free trip by having your recommended consent letter legally notarized. Fast, affordable, and available in-person or entirely online.

Additional witnesses may be required beyond the notary. While a notary can often serve as a witness, some documents—such as wills, powers of attorney, or real estate documents—may need extra witnesses present.

Our main Brampton service desk is centrally located off Airport Road, serving individuals and businesses across the entire Peel Region. Whether you reside in one of our local neighborhoods or are commuting from a nearby community, you can access fast, professional notary services at your convenience.

What is a Child Travel Consent Letter?

A child travel consent letter is a legal document used when a minor is traveling abroad alone, with only one parent/guardian, with friends, or with a group (like a school or sports team).

Canadian border officials, as well as foreign immigration authorities, frequently ask for this document to verify that the child has permission to travel from every person who holds legal custody. Having this letter officially signed and sealed by a licensed Ontario notary public provides undeniable proof of its authenticity, drastically reducing the risk of being delayed or turned away at the border.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any parent or guardian who has legal custody of the child, but is not traveling with them, must sign the consent letter. If the child is traveling with one parent, the other parent must sign. If the child is traveling with grandparents, both parents must sign.

While Canadian law does not strictly mandate that a consent letter be notarized, the Government of Canada strongly recommends it. Border officials have the right to question the authenticity of an un-notarized letter, which can lead to severe travel delays or denied entry.
